Harold Jarche: Kieran Egan - 1942-2022. I found out the other day that another person who has inspired my work has passed away. Kieran Egan’s book, The Educated Mind: How Cognitive Tools Shape Our Understanding greatly influenced my thinking on public education (more)

Myth is a genre of folklore or theology consisting primarily of narratives that play a fundamental role in a society, such as foundational tales or origin myths. For folklorists, historians, philosophers or theologians this is very different from the use of "myth" which simply meaning something that is not true. Instead, the truth value of a myth is not a defining criterion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth

The classical education movement or renewal advocates for a return to a traditional education based on the liberal arts (including the natural sciences), the canons of classical literature, the fine arts, and the history of civilization.[1] It focuses on human formation and paideia with an early emphasis on music, gymnastics, recitation, imitation, and grammar.[2] Multiple organizations support classical education in charter schools, in independent faith-based schools, and in home schooling. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_education_movement

Back in 2010 SalonCom had an article about Hipsters using Food Stamps (to buy hipster-ish fancy groceries). Faced with lingering UnEmployment, 20- and 30-somethings with College Degrees and foodie standards are shaking off old taboos about who should get government assistance and discovering that government benefits can indeed be used for just about anything edible, including wild-caught fish, organic asparagus and triple-crème cheese. Brandon Hendrickson: on Spiral history. 1. A problem. Because stories are the One Tool to Rule Them All, the story of the whole world is the backbone of an Egan education. It connects everything, and helps give everything its flavor. The other backbone of an Egan education, of course, is the different ways of understanding that we gradually build (more)

Brandon Hendrickson: Your Book Review: The Educated Mind. Could a new kind of school make the world rational? I discovered the work of Kieran Egan in a dreary academic library. The book I happened to find — Getting it Wrong from the Beginning — was an evisceration of progressive schools. As I worked at one at the time, I got a kick out of this. (more)

Brandon Hendrickson: Towers, and kids' brains, and bears, oh my! Brandon Hendrickson: Unraveling Fears. Basic plan: Starting in middle school (grade 5), students identify one fear each year.1 At the start of the second semester, classes brainstorm together what their fears might be, and brainstorm how they might be lessened. Students — in pairs, or on their own — embark on small experiments to see if they can reduce their fear. (more)

Exclusive: Steve Bannon, Trump’s New C.E.O., Hints at His Master Plan. In some sense, the organization is also the first significant American outlet to articulate and represent, in a large-scale way, a new philosophy of nationalism and populism that has found strong purchase in American society, and in many other parts of the globe (more)

How Steve Bannon guided the MAGA movement’s rebound from Jan. 6. Seated in his podcast studio, Bannon looked, as usual, under-slept and over-caffeinated, but on this morning, the first Saturday in February 2021, his beady eyes were bright with excitement. (more)

Breitbart News Network (known commonly as Breitbart News, Breitbart, or Breitbart.com) is an American far-right[5] syndicated news, opinion, and commentary[6][7] website founded in mid-2007 by American conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart. Its content has been described as misogynistic, xenophobic, and racist by academics and journalists.[8] The site has published a number of conspiracy theories[9][10] and intentionally misleading stories.[11][12] Posts originating from the Breitbart News Facebook page are among the most widely shared political content on Facebook.[13][14][15][16] Initially conceived as "the Huffington Post of the right",[4][17][18] Breitbart News later aligned with the alt-right, the European populist right, and the pan-European nationalist identitarian movement under the management of former executive chairman Steve Bannon,[19][20][21] who declared the website "the platform for the alt-right" in 2016. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breitbart_News

Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who was the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 until his suicide in 1945. He rose to power as the leader of the Nazi Party,[c] becoming the chancellor in 1933 and then taking the title of Führer und Reichskanzler in 1934.[d] During his dictatorship, he initiated the European theatre of World War II by invading Poland on 1 September 1939. He was closely involved in military operations throughout the war and was central to the perpetration of the Holocaust: the genocide of about six million Jews and millions of other victims. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler

Watched "Hitler's Pawn" last night, about Margaret Lambert and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. She was dragged back to Germany from England to be a token Jewish member of the German team, to keep the US from boycotting. Then, once the Americans were on the boat heading for the Games, they told her she was rejected for weak performance (despite having set a world record the month before), and told everyone else she had been injured. It's just lovely to hear that Avery Brundage, President of the US Olympic Committee for 25 years, was a big Anti Semite.
